A Ghanaian won the Africa Teacher Prize in 2019 under the NPP – NAPO

The Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) has said that a Ghanaian has won the Africa Teacher Prize in 2019 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The minister made this revelation at a Nation Building event organized by the government held on Wednesday, October 29, 2021 at the premises of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.

Global Teacher Prize

According to the Minister, when the National Teaching Council (NTC) introduced the Ghana Teacher Prize to replace the National Teachers Awards, two Ghanaian Teachers were among the Top 50 Teachers at the Global Teacher Prize.

The Minister added, that the accolades came as a result of the government’s numerous interventions at improving the welfare of teachers.

Achievements

The Minister added, that with respect to Teacher Education and profession, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been able to save teachers facing over a hundred panels during promotion interviews.

He indicated the NPP government introduced the writing of Aptitude Test to allow teachers to write tests for promotion in relation to their Skills acquisition, knowledge about the profession as well as their professional development.

Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh also indicated that the NPP government restored the College of Education Trainees Allowances which was being scrapped by the Mahama Government.

He added, that the NPP government introduced the Bachelor of Education programme into the Colleges of Education to allow teachers to gain their degrees without leaving their classroom for further studies.

In addition, NAPO said the NPP government-affiliated the Colleges of Education in the country to the Public Universities.

He also indicated that the NPP developed the National Teaching Standards of which an assessment framework was developed for it.

He said the NPP introduced quality assurance scheme for Teachers at the Colleges of Education.

NAPO further indicated that the NPP introduced the Licensing of Teachers and the Teachers Professional Allowances.
